[Starkit] strategies for updating starkits

Was tossing around some ideas in my head for updating starkits from a central 
repository the other day.  Basically just a way for the starkit to, say, contact an 
FTP or HTTP server to check for updates, download them, and apply them.

My first thought is really a temporary measure: the client could download changed 
source files, and have the client run those after it goes through it's normal setup 
procedure.  When a new official release is made, the downloaded files could be purged 
and the cycle starts again (that is, the updates would be off the release cycle). 
This is an OK method but not perfect.

Anyone else done this or thought about it?
