Whoops, you did.  I'm inclined to either adopt this for Linux, or at  
least clearly document it so people can easily find out about this  
approach.  As Jeff indicates:

Idiocies suits me fine ;) - it seems as if the Unix mindset of "just  
do configure/make" (in the simplest case) is not going away.  Worse  
still, I'm afraid it's not even being perceived as a problem.  Linux  
distro's do binaries, but redo the whole system to keep all the  
dependencies in sync.  Yuck - one has to wonder why no one has ever  
considered *reducing* the dependencies!!!

Imagine what our real world cities would be like if we always made  
changes to them by starting from scratch.  We'd *still* be in the  
stone age.
