[Starkit] linux distro choice

Steve Landers just told me that my latest tclkit 8.4.13 builds (both
dyn & static) are "too recent" for his purposes (these binaries even
have the nerve to call his kernel "too old"!).
So now I have two questions:
1) Could someone please confirm that tclkit at least works fine on
Linux x86 when built with the latest genkit & tars?
2) Could someone please offer some advice as to which Linux x86
distribution I should set up here to build a better tclkit binary on,
i.e. one which has a reasonable chance of working on a common range
of Linux distributions out there? It's primarily a -lc and -lstdc++
version choice issue I think.
If we can't come up with a good way out, then I'm afraid that tclkit
will end up no longer having a general binary on Linux. It'll be
back to "just build your own". Which would kill the whole point of
starkits & starpacks on Linux, IMO.
