I often wondered that myself.  It is irritating to no end to have this 
kind of nonsense.  We give our source code away, but we have no users 
that are capable of compiling a complex bit of software.  We simply 
must distribute binaries!

I'm not sure exactly what the problem is, but the LSB I think is 
working on something like this.  I don't know what state it is in now, 
but at the time, it still could not compile C++ applications so it was 
useless for me.
